Take Back Fletcher Drive
Atwater Village merchants and residents have started to refocus their attention in
improving Fletcher Drive by reducing crime, graffiti, and nuisance activity. The
area of Fletcher Drive in which these improvement efforts are being focused is
between the Los Angeles River (Fletcher Drive Bridge) and San Fernando Road.

This grassroots effort has gain momentum as merchants, residents, community
groups, and city officials have begun to work together to confront Fletcher Drive
problems. Efforts have already been made to address long standing problems like
graffiti and narcotic activity.  As this grassroots campaign gains momentum it will
start to seek soutions for other problems like the homeless encampment by the
Fletcher Drive Bridge and the various traffic / pedestrian crossing safety issues.

Take Back Fletcher Drive Updates...
April 25, 2005 update...
On April 20th the Atwater Griffith Park Chamber of Commerce held a follow-up meeting on the Take Back Fletcher Drive
campaign.

Nuisance Public Telephones: Fletcher Drive has 5 nuisance public telephones (one in front if M&W Liquor, two at Fosters
Freeze, and two at Ray’s Liquor) that are widely used for illicit activity. With the valuable help of
Councilmember Eric Garcetti
(CD13) and his staff the public telephone in front of M&W Liquor (2801 Fletcher Drive) is scheduled to be removed at the end of
April. The other 4 nuisance phones have proven slightly more difficult to remove since they are located on private property and the
property owners have not been as responsive to requests to have them removed. In a team effort, the Atwater Griffith Park
Chamber of Commerce will be contacting the property owners to hopefully obtain their cooperation to remove the telephones.

Reporting Crime & Quality-of-Life Problems: Despite crime, graffiti, and other quality-of-life problems that Fletcher Drive faces
on a daily basis the LAPD has received virtually no complaints for stakeholders in the community; merchant and residents alike.
We encourage that all stakeholders take a more hands-on approach in reporting non-emergency observations to the LAPD.

Report by telephone non-emergency problems to our Senior Lead Officer Gina Chovan at 213.793.0713
Report by email non-emergency problems to our Community Police Advisory Board Representative Jeanmarie
Wisniewski at jmwinsure@earthlink.net
Report by mail non-emergency problems to the LAPD Northeast Division (Captain Morris Smith) at 3353 San Fernando
Road, Los Angeles, CA 90039

U-Haul @ Larga Avenue: A sincere thanks to the management team at U-Haul for there positive efforts to improve their corner of
Fletcher Drive. They have installed “creeping vines” to help deter graffiti, quickly removed graffiti when it does occur and clean-up
rubbish left by day-labors. The community needs to encourage U-Haul to continue their important efforts, please take time to
send a “thank you” letter or email to express your support as an Atwater Village Stakeholder and Consumer.

Merchant Education Efforts: The Atwater Griffith Park Chamber of Commerce (AGPCC) will be sending Take Back Fletcher Drive
newsletters to all merchants along Fletcher Drive. The AGPCC hopes to empower and educate local merchants on what they
can do for themselves to improve their section of Fletcher Drive.

Volunteer Opportunities: The Take Back Fletcher Drive campaign continues to be a grassroots effort and depends of volunteers
to advance its goals. Please volunteer your time for the betterment of Fletcher Drive and the surrounding area. Check out the
below volunteer opportunities and contact Luis Lopez at 323.665.0166 or
luis@atwaterchamber.org if you can help.

Newsletter: we need individuals that can help develop and edit text for the Take Back Fletcher Drive newsletter
Flier Distributor: we need “block captains” to help distribute filers to residents living at least within a block of Fletcher
Drive (between the LA River and San Fernando Road).
January 30th, 2005 update...
The “Take Back Fletcher Drive” grassroots campaign to improve Fletcher Drive by reducing crime, graffiti, and nuisance activity
has gained momentum. The campaign took a stride forward with the help of the Atwater Griffith Park Chamber of Commerce
(AGPCC); who sponsored the “Take Back Fletcher Drive” merchant meeting.

On January 19th Fletcher Drive merchants, Senior Lead Officer Gina Chovan, and Deputy City Attorney Jeanne Kim attended an
AGPCC sponsored forum to network and discuss the many quality-of-life problems that Fletcher Drive faces. The forum allowed
Fletcher Drive merchants to gain a new prospective on what they can do to help improve the area and gave city officials a better
understanding of the problems.

In addition to networking and discussion the “Take Back Fletcher Drive” grassroots campaign is making concrete progress to
reduce the drug-selling activity on Fletcher Drive.  With the valuable assistance of Council District 13 and the cooperation of
various Fletcher Drive merchants several public telephones frequently used for narcotic activities will be removed.
